    Year 11 General English – G1ENG & G2ENG

    The English General course focuses on consolidating and refining the skills and knowledge needed by you to become a competent, confident and engaged user of English in everyday, community, social, further education, training and workplace contexts. The course is designed to provide you with the skills to succeed in a wide range of post-secondary pathways by developing your language, literacy and literary skills. You will comprehend, analyse, interpret, evaluate and create analytical, imaginative, interpretive and persuasive texts in a range of written, oral, multimodal and digital forms.

    Unit 1

    Prerequisite: minimum Year 10 English C grade.

    This unit focuses on comprehending and responding to the ideas and information presented in texts. You will learn to employ a variety of strategies to assist comprehension while reading, viewing and listening to texts to connect, interpret and visualise ideas. You will learn how to respond personally and logically to them by questioning, using inferential reasoning and determining the importance of content and structure. Interaction with others in a range of contexts, including every day, community, social, further education, training and workplace contexts; and communicating ideas and information clearly and correctly in a range of contexts is a component of this unit. Your understanding of language will be applied through the creation of texts for different purposes. This unit is also offered as a flexible iLearn course.

    Prerequisite: minimum Year 10 English C grade.

    This unit focuses on interpreting ideas and arguments in a range of texts and contexts. You will learn how to analyse text structures and language features and identify the ideas, arguments and values expressed, while considering purpose, possible audiences and the context in which the text is created and received. To develop your own interpretations and learn to interact effectively in a range of contexts you will integrate relevant information and ideas from texts. Using persuasive, visual and literary techniques to engage audiences in a range of modes and media you will create texts. This unit is also offered as a flexible iLearn course.

    Year 11 ATAR English – A1ENG & A2ENG

    The English ATAR course focuses on developing your analytical, creative, and critical thinking and communication skills in all language modes, encouraging students to critically engage with texts from their contemporary world, the past, and from Australian and other cultures. Through close study and wide reading, viewing and listening, you will develop the ability to analyse and evaluate the purpose, stylistic qualities and conventions of texts and to enjoy creating imaginative, interpretive, persuasive and analytical responses in a range of written, oral, multimodal and digital forms.

    Unit 1

    This unit is suited to you if you are aiming to enrol in university.
    Prerequisite: minimum Year 10 English B grade or equivalent.

    In this unit you will explore how meaning is communicated through the relationships between language, text, purpose, context and audience. Through responding to and creating texts, you will consider how language, structure and conventions operate in a variety of imaginative, interpretive and persuasive texts. Study in this unit focuses on the similarities and differences between texts and how visual elements combine with spoken and written elements to create meaning. This unit is also offered as a flexible iLearn course.

    Unit 2

    This unit is suited to you if you are aiming to enrol in university.
    Prerequisite: minimum Year 10 English B grade or equivalent.

    In this unit you will analyse the representation of ideas, attitudes and voices in texts to consider how texts represent the world and human experience. Analysis of how language and structural choices shape perspectives in and for a range of contexts is central to this unit. By responding to and creating texts in different modes and media, you will consider the interplay of imaginative, interpretive, persuasive and analytical elements in a range of texts and present your own analyses. You will critically examine the effect of stylistic choices and the ways in which these choices position audiences for particular purposes, revealing and/or shaping attitudes, values and perspectives. This unit is also offered as a flexible iLearn course.

    Year 12 General English – GTENG

    Typically this course is suited to you if you are aiming to enter further training or the workforce.

    Prerequisite: a Year 11 General English C grade or higher.

    Unit 3: This unit focuses on exploring different perspectives presented in a range of texts and contexts.

    You will examine the ways that perspectives are presented in literary, every day and workplace texts as well as understand how language choices influence specific audiences. While creating oral, written and multimodal texts that convey a perspective you will explore attitudes, text structures and language features to understand a text’s meaning and purpose.

    Unit 4: This unit focuses on community, local or global issues and ideas presented in texts and on developing your reasoned responses to them.

    You will investigate and understand the way language is used to present issues and attitudes as well as influence and engage different audiences from a range of sources. You will create oral, written and multimodal texts that communicate ideas and perspectives on issues using coherent, logical and sustained arguments and demonstrating an understanding of purpose, audience and context. This unit pair is also offered as a flexible iLearn course.

    Year 12 ATAR English – ATENG

    Typically this course is highly recommended if you are aiming to enrol in university. If you are attempting this course without having achieved the suggested entry levels you will find the complexity of texts and conceptual understandings required challenging.

    Prerequisite: Minimum C grade in Year 11 ATAR English or equivalent.
    (Students who have achieved a C grade in Year 11 ATAR English who wish to enrol in this English course are encouraged to access regular English tutoring).

    Unit 3: This unit focuses on the representations of themes, issues, ideas and concepts through a comparison of texts. You will analyse and compare the relationships between language, genre and contexts, comparing texts within and/or across different genres and modes. You will learn to recognise and analyse the conventions of genre in texts and consider how those conventions may assist interpretation. Comparisons and evaluations of the effect of different media, forms and modes on the structure of texts and how audiences respond to them are integral to the course. Your understanding of these concepts will be demonstrated through the creation of imaginative, interpretive, persuasive and analytical responses.

    Unit 4: You will examine different interpretations and perspectives of a range of texts to develop further your knowledge and analysis of purpose and style. Through the development and testing of your own interpretations you will challenge perspectives, values and attitudes in texts. Through close study of texts, you will explore relationships between content and structure, voice and perspectives and the text and context. Your understanding of these concepts will be demonstrated through the creation of imaginative, interpretive, persuasive and analytical responses. This unit pairing is also offered as a flexible iLearn course.
