Dr Karen Read has been a secondary school Principal with the Western Australian Department of Education at Southern River College, Sevenoaks Senior College and Cyril Jackson Senior Campus. Karen is a passionate advocate for Public Education with equity of access to education for all students to all opportunities, irrespective of student social and cultural background, being her priority purpose.
Dr Read’s leadership roles have been at a District level as Director of Schools and Principal Consultant leading Principals with school planning reform. At a system level Karen was in a team of Principal Advisors, responsible for the leading the implementation of the student-centred funding model across schools in WA. Karen has been a consultant with the Department of Education and has facilitated the Leading Schools Improvement workshops with the Institute of Professional Learning; and has also been a school reviewer, reviewing primary and secondary Independent Public Schools. Karen has lectured in the Masters in Teaching and Masters in School Leadership degrees at the University of Western Australia.
As a District Principal Consultant Karen has organized and participated in two study tours for Principals to visit schools across Australia, researching best practice of networked schools in delivering senior school reforms. Karen also recently spent two weeks in England visiting Universities and schools as a part of a UWA study tour. Her focus was on senior school including educational program delivery, assessment practices and school self-assessment processes, comparing this to current local and national practices in Australia. Dr Read’s thesis, awarded in 2013 from UWA, focused on large scale senior school curriculum reform.
